RATING: 5 "BLAZING" STARS
Ms. Halle, what were you trying to do to me with this book? Give me a mini-heart attack?? Holy hell, what a thrill ride. Sins and Needles, Book 1 of The Artist Trilogy by Karina Halle, shows you a few years older Ellie Watt. She has up and left her lover, Javier Bernal after his unforgiving act tore her apart. She has been conning across country, but now wants to start a new life in the one place that felt, somewhat like home: Palm Valley, California. What she didn't encounter was: a cold uncle who isn't thrilled at her presence, an old high school friend who she thought would never look her way again and the opportunity to con just one more time and truly get away. When the tables are turned and the person she's conning turns out to have one up her, will she be able to get out of this alive or will she have to worry about a deadlier opponent she thought was left behind.
Yeah I was feeling this book something serious from beginning to end. If I didn't read the synopsis, one would think that Ellie was trying to go straight and leave the conning in the past, but that just would of been too good to be true. I will say though, Ellie is one of my favorite heroines so far. She is flawed to no end, but she doesn't try to mask or sugar-coat anything. You deal with it or you don't. It's that simple with her. The new guy in the picture now is Camden McQueen. Actually, he isn't total new. This was an old high school friendship that ended very early during their time in school together. They were both consider the outcast because of the scar on her leg and him being the Goth kid that people feared. So to fast forward to the now and for them to pick up as if time kind of healed its self was nice. But you know, it just wouldn't end that simply. To con Camden I thought was so wrong. He was actually starting to forgive you and hope you changed, but like I said, Ellie makes tn apologies for who she is.
Another aspect that made this book click for me was the alternative time pieces in the book, kind of like a then and now. You got a lot of back story and insight to Ellie and Camden's history. There was also towards the end a lot of action. Damn could Ms. Halle make you feel like you were part of this thrill ride. Then of course I can't leave out the hot sex between Mr. Cam and Ellie. On top of car sex: HOTTTT! But of course these two can't get a HEA because a jealous ex-lover who wants to ruin all the damn fun. Damn you Javier. Still love your sexy behind though.
So what did I think of this? Out of a 5 I'm giving this 5 BLAZING stars! Well Done! On to Shooting Scars.
