Author: Kate L. Mary
Genre: New Adult post-apocalyptic/zombie
Publication Date: July 4, 2014
When a deadly virus sweeps the country, Vivian Thomas sets out for California in hopes of seeing the daughter she gave up for adoption. Then her car breaks down and she’s faced with a choice. Give up, or accept a ride from redneck brothers, Angus and Axl. Vivian knows the offer has more to do with her double D’s than kindness, but she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to reach her daughter.
The virus is spreading, and by the time the group makes it to California, most of the population has been wiped out. When the dead start coming back, Vivian and the others realize that no electricity or running water are the least of their concerns. Now Vivian has to figure out how to be a mother under the most frightening circumstances, cope with Angus’s aggressive mood swings, and sort out her growing attraction to his brooding younger brother, Axl.
While searching for a safe place to go, they pick up a pompous billionaire who may be the answer to all their problems. Trusting him means going into the middle of the Mojave Desert and possibly risking their lives, but with the streets overrun and nowhere else to turn, it seems he might be their only chance for survival.

After reading, "Broken World", there is one thing I know for sure: It's going to be extremely hard to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the living dead are the majority and humans are pretty much on the brink of extinction. This book was creepy, tragic, graphic in many parts and thought provoking. And I truly loved every freaking minute of it.
Right from the start you are thrown into a world that would come straight out of a tv or a movie. A deadly virus is sweeping the US. Death and despair is littering every street corner. Vivian is determine to get to California to see the daughter she put up for adoption 4 yrs ago at the young age of 16. This could be her only chance to see her and say goodbye if the world is going to end. On her way there her car breaks downs and begrudgingly accepts a ride from brothers Angus and Axl. She knows these two can be nothing but trouble. What choice does she have? Soon after they pick up more survivors as they try to find a safe haven. That place seems to be a secluded area out West. During Vivian's journey, she sees the group and the rest of the world take on a completely different form. A form that she couldn't even imagine. Can she make it to her daughter in time? And will they be able to survive in this post apocalyptic world together?
If you are a Zombieafficiando and love doomsday films, like myself, you will enjoy this book. What I liked about the story was that it was set with a slow and steady pace. You didn't get Zombies jumping at you right from the first page. You got to know these group of people that you understand, appreciate & basically grow to love. The core group being: Vivian, Axl and Angus. At first you aren't sure what the heck to make of them. I thought the one brother, being Angus, was a filthy foul mouth A-hole who you wish got bitten before all of them, but by the middle-end was hoping that he would be ok because you need his filthy foul mouth a-hokey ways. Yes, he's a hard pill to swallow, but sometimes a dose of reality is what you need and Angus is that dose and then some. Then you have Axl. He's a hot and cold type of a dude. You don't know what graces you are in when you're with him. He's got a thing for Viv but of course him being a stubborn man is fighting it. I find him a bit more frightening then Angus to be honest. But like Angus, by the middle and end knew he needed to stick around or you're going to riot. I like him! Please keep him going strong! Viv is cool, she's strong but kind of has her priorities all over the place. I will say when disaster strikes her I think she improved the most, in character, by the end of this book.
If you are a fan of "The Walking Dead", you will know subtle references and similarities to the show. I thought that was pretty cool. I swear Axl and Angus are Daryl and Meryl to me, respectively. And I love my Daryl just like I'm loving my Axl now. So please Ms. Mary please don't get rid of him. I know this is a story and it's set in a doomsday world where no one is safe, but pleassssse hold on to Axl. Pretty please with a cherry on top? LOL!
Now this is a series and book 2 isn't out until October! And yes it ends in a cliffhanger...BOO! You do, however get a peek into Chapter 1 of the next book, "Shattered World". So you will survive just liked I have, don't panic. Pick up this book and open your mind to new horizons. Loved this. 5 out of 5 for me!

Kate L. Mary is a stay-at-home mother of four and an Air Force wife. She spent most of her life in a small town just north of Dayton, Ohio where she and her husband met at the age of twelve. Since their marriage in 2002, they have lived in Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and California.
Kate’s love of books and writing has helped her survive countless husbandless nights. She enjoys any post-apocalyptic story – especially if zombies are involved – as long as there is a romantic twist to give the story hope. Kate prefers nerdy, non-traditional heroes who can make you laugh to hunky pieces of man-meat, and her love of wine and chocolate is legendary among her friends and family. She currently resides in Oklahoma with her husband and children.
