Then again, the best things in life are always worth fighting for...
My Review
When I read and then, subsequently, fall in love with a book and its characters..it's something serious. They do a true number on me. In my mind, I dive into their world, take up residence and watch their story unfold. I go through every freaking process:
- happiness
- heartache
- discovery
- forgiveness
- redemption
- then happiness all over again
You know when a book has your heart and will never come close to leaving you. It just stays with you for days, months and even years. This book will be that one and will speak to me for years to come.
"Urban Love Prophecy" by Jessica Ingro is such a flip from what seems to be making its way around the book world. Rockers and their chicks. Well this one is about a rapper and his woman. Lord, thank you! Granted, I am no longer a hip-hop or rap fan cause I think the music game in general is just corny and whack. But this was different. A raw and telling tale of two people from two totally different worlds, literally, coming together to make it work. Through all the tough and rough roads both individuals traveled. Victoria Watson (Tori or "T" as Jayson likes to call her) is down and out, somewhat. She has been thrown on her ass since her ailing father's skanky wife has completely cut her off. So she is working at a stripclub as a waitress to make ends meet and try to get back on her feet. Little did she know her life would change from that moment on when serving a group of men at the club. One of them gets a bit touchy feely and one member of the group comes to her defense. He also helps her fend off another ass that was getting too full of himself too. This man you ask? Oh no one in particular. Just some BIG TIME producer and rap KING, Jayson Santiago. And who can also make your ovaries go KABOOM with his sexiness. Damn. Sorry, back to my review...So Jay and Tori strike up a friendship from that night. But they both know there is something different about one another that keeps them both intrigue and fighting to keep things strictly platonic. They both know they want to be together, but can they both see past their own hangups to even make that term called a "relationship" work?
I swear I've had more of a pep to my step since finishing this book. I truly don't think my words in this review are going to justify just how amazing this book was. So I'm going to try. First let me talk about the couple. Tori was a great definition of a strong female character. Yes, she grew up privileged, but she was by no means stuck up. Cool down to earth chick. Who was taught by both her parents to respect and understand everyone who may or may not have the same fortune or opportunities as you. She was dealt a shitty hand by her stepmom (and I use that term extremely loosely). Being caught off by her and basically being shut out of her father's life. I couldn't possibly even begin to imagine what that felt like and I hope I never do. Through all of that and with the help of Jay she got to see him and still remained poised and define when coming face to face with her stepmom. I would of beat the chick down but that's just me. LOL! Tori was such a class act in this book. For anyone not to think Tori was not right for him was either stupid or blind.

Now let's get to the sexy beast that has me wanting my very own Jay Santiago. This man is sexy, charming, smart, caring...yada, yada, yada. I could go on and on and you would get bored. Don't want to do that. I will say Jay was a man of power and perseverance. Living in the projects, being around violence there are either two options: you either become that lifestyle or rise above it. After tragedy, Jay decided to rise above it. The element was still around him, but he just didn't involve himself with the nonsense. Now, even though sexy beast was amazing and alphaish..he was infuriating at times. He has basically been through the wringer with women. Feeling Tori was just like the rest, he really didn't take what they had seriously, at first. At times I was cursing at Jay for the way he was treating her. Just trifling!! I'm so glad he had people around to knock some sense into him. He was damaging something really good and chose to turn a blind eye to it. I really want Tori to get one good slap into him. But I still loved him.

As it's been said in the synopsis and even other reviews I've read..this was not a hearts and flowers type of book. Or an easy love. This was a hard fought, drag down fight and we've finally got there kind of a love. And honestly everyone needs to read those kind of books from time to time. Another thing I loved that the author did was she made the couple an interracial couple. Not touch upon in a lot of the books I've read. She didn't make it a Black/Hispanic man with a White woman and how their families felt about it type of a book. Was it mentioned, yes. Was it overdone, No. And it truly didn't need to. Like her characters, the author didn't see "race" or "colorlines". It was just two people from two totally different backgrounds trying to make this love thing work, for them and no one else. I think and feel Jessica wrote her ass off with this book and I am going to say that this is her best work by far. Jay and Tori was a phenomenal couple and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am so sad this was not a series. I would love to get more of Jay and Tori in a heartbeat. But truthfully their story was complete and rightfully so.
Out of a 5, I'm giving this a 5+++++++. Great book.
